THE BENCHMARK MATERIAL
Because true glaze is essentially glass fused directly to clay in a kiln, it creates a uniquely fade-resistant finish
that holds its vibrant color in the Florida sun better than any other material.
Glaze is far more than a simple coat of paint or a temporary sealer. It is a carefully formulated mineral coating that melts during the intense heat of the firing process, fusing permanently to the clay body to become a true, impermeable glass surface. Because it is chemically bonded, this layer cannot peel, flake, or fade over time. The result is a vibrant, enduring finish where a simple wipe with a damp cloth is all the maintenance it will ever need.

At the heart of true quality lies vitrification. When clay is fired at extremely high temperatures, it becomes incredibly dense and nearly non-porous, meaning it absorbs almost no water. This invisible transformation is the secret to a planter's longevity.
In contrast, low-fired pottery remains porous beneath its glaze. It drinks water, stains easily, weeps onto surfaces, and provides a direct path for salt to permeate. Ultimately, firing temperature—not just surface appearance—is the single biggest predictor of how a piece will look in ten years. In South Florida's demanding climate, that difference reveals itself within just a few seasons.

High, bright South Florida light intensifies saturated glazes and can flatten muted ones; choose color against the architecture behind the piece rather than in isolation.
Our team will gladly walk you through these details in person.
Weight for the size
Wall thickness at the rim
Glaze running cleanly to a finished foot ring (not a ragged stop line)
A clear ring when tapped (vs a dull thud)
Crazing in glaze vs a crack in the clay body
Consistent color across the form
Ultraviolet light inevitably degrades applied paints, resins, and clear coats. Glaze, however, is fired glass. It remains entirely impervious to UV radiation, retaining its original color indefinitely.
The high-fire vitrified body provides salt with absolutely no porous path to enter. While salt spray actively degrades concrete, glazed ceramics remain structurally untouched.
A completely sealed, waterproof surface means these pieces can sit directly on premium wood flooring or natural stone without leaving moisture rings or requiring drainage trays.
Note: Impact is the one real vulnerability - glaze is fundamentally glass, and glass does not forgive a dropped tool or a hard strike.
Warm water and a soft cloth. No abrasives or acidic cleaners (they dull the surface over time). Hard-water spotting lifts with diluted white vinegar on a cloth, rinsed after. Note: unglazed materials patina by design; glazed pottery simply stays what it was.
Before You Buy
From Florida sun and coastal conditions to drainage, delivery, and large-scale placement, here are a few things to consider before selecting your outdoor pottery.
We select outdoor pottery and planters with Florida conditions in mind. As with any exterior finish, long-term appearance can vary depending on sun exposure, salt, weather, location, and care. If a planter will be placed in an especially exposed setting, our team can help you compare materials, finishes, and pieces based on the specific location.
Coastal locations can expose outdoor pottery to salt, wind, moisture, and severe weather. Material, finish, size, weight, base dimensions, placement, and the amount of direct exposure should all be considered. Rather than making a blanket recommendation, we prefer to evaluate the location and help you select pieces appropriate for the conditions.
Wind exposure and severe weather should always be considered when placing outdoor pottery. The appropriate precautions depend on the size, weight, location, surrounding structures, and individual site conditions. Heavy or planted pieces should not be moved without appropriate help and equipment. For large or unusual installations, we recommend discussing the location with our team and following applicable local storm-preparation guidance.
Most of our outdoor planters arrive with drainage openings already provided. For pieces that are not pre-drilled, professional drilling may be available prior to delivery. Because materials and construction vary, drilling requires specialized equipment and experienced handling and carries some risk of cracking. Drilling is evaluated and quoted individually. Outdoor planters should have an unobstructed drainage opening, and pot feet or risers may be appropriate where elevation is needed to keep that opening clear of the surface below. We do not recommend planting directly into a piece without adequate drainage.
Yes. We offer lighter-weight planter options that may be considered for balconies, rooftop terraces, upper-level decks, and other locations where weight is a concern. Floral Acres does not provide structural engineering, load calculations, or structural-capacity certifications. Before selecting or placing any piece where structural capacity may be an issue, customers should consult the building owner, association, architect, engineer, or another appropriately qualified professional. Final product selection and placement should be evaluated individually.
Our experienced crew handles delivery and placement, using specialized equipment when the piece or site calls for it. Delivery pricing and feasibility depend on factors including distance, piece size and weight, access, gate widths, stairs, pathways, turning room, surface conditions, elevation changes, and the intended placement location. Accurate measurements and a physical inspection of the property are often required for oversized, monumental, or difficult installations before a delivery or placement quote can be provided. We prefer to identify those details early so the delivery can be planned properly.
Absolutely. In addition to the pieces available at our gallery, our longstanding vendor relationships allow us to source distinctive pottery from Italy, Vietnam, Mexico, and other sources as availability permits. If you are searching for a particular size, shape, finish, style, or project quantity, talk with our team and we'll explore the available options.
Yes. We welcome landscape designers, landscape architects, interior and exterior designers, architects, professional landscapers, builders, and other trade professionals. Our team can assist with pottery selection, sourcing, coordinating pieces for larger projects, and evaluating delivery and placement requirements for your client's property.
Yes. Trade accounts and trade pricing are available for qualifying professionals, and project holds may be available depending on the pieces, quantity, timing, and project requirements. Speak with our team at the gallery so we can review the specifics of your project and the options currently available.
